Seattle Foundation's Giving with Goals Recognized as a National Model

National conference showcases giving tools and staff expertise

April 30, 2017

By Kim Wright, Director, Family Philanthropy

Adnet staff photoSeaFdn’s philanthropic tools and advising strategies earned national acclaim at the 2017 Community Foundation Advancement (Adnet) Conference, where our staff presented our Giving with Goals curriculum.

The presentation focused on SeaFdn’s field-leading expertise on helping families, individuals, and companies develop impact-driven giving plans that lift up the importance of relationships with community organizations. We had an audience of 80 community foundation colleagues in the room, all interested in how they can learn from our experience and use the related workbook, which will be licensed to the field in 2018.

Seattle Foundation Philanthropic Advisors Katie Donnelly, Stephen Robinson and I shared ten major lessons learned that have helped us revise the popular Giving with Goals strategic advising tool, as well as the development of a new Giving with Impact edition for highly engaged and high capacity philanthropists/givers.

We also shared research from the 2015 Money for Good study on donor behaviors and hesitations for giving. According to data from Giving USA, philanthropy is in a period of stasis. Giving levels have hovered in the 2-2.1% range for 40 years. New approaches and partnerships must be forged to move the needle and better address our community needs.

Raising that bar requires that we enhance the role of philanthropic advisors in the field. We have an exciting opportunity to bring more tested tools and research to fully activate the network of 700 community foundations who have both strong community knowledge and the trust of philanthropic partners. We share a collective purpose of helping individuals, families and companies be as impactful as they can be while reaching their “true generosity potential.”
